Holiday Party

The Holiday Party was on Saturday, December 14th. It was an eventful night with all sorts of activities. Members caroled to the tunes that Marie played on the piano. One specific member by the name of Hal Clements had a wonderful voice that really stood out. It was great to see so many participate and have that holiday spirit. There was also a special visit by Santa around 7:45pm that night. Rachel Wurth, Nancy Wurth's 7 year old niece, told her aunt that it was the real Santa Claus that night and not one of his helpers. Santa dazzled them all, young and old! A special thanks to Dennis Brennan who played Santa and Margaret Brennan who was Mrs. Claus.

There were many people who helped make this night so much fun. Nancy Wurth, Cathy Haag and Margaret Brennan were on the committee. They put a lot of time and effort into this night. Cathy organized the music and it was noted that she made an excellent choice of the group for the 5 golden rings. Other members who helped with decorating, organizing the food and cleaning that night who need to be thanked are: Diana Conolly, Michelle Mayhew, Shirley Burgess, Ursula Hilborn, Dotty Sheehan and Jane Caruvana.

It was a great night at the club, thank you to all who came out to enjoy the festivities.

Holiday Gifts at the Curling Boutique

Still looking for that perfect gift? Don’t forget to stop by the curling boutique. There are sweaters and shirts starting at $20, brooms between $30 and $55, gloves, sliders and other perfect holiday gifts. See Dorothy Szymaszek with questions or to purchase something at the boutique!

What's (Been) Going On?

Many of you have wondered about all the things that have been going on with our physical plant this past year or two and where those donations you have been asked to make have been going. In this multi-part article we hope that we can bring you up to date with what has happened and why, but also let you know what may be on the horizon.

Our ice field has seen some major happenings this past summer. With the Herculean efforts of Jeff Mayott and Joe Summers and the efforts of a host of other volunteers we have replaced the header on our ice field. As many of you know our old header had deteriorated severely and was in danger of developing a leak that would have been catastrophic for our curling season. Our new one, judging from its weight, should withstand a nuclear blast.

Many of you may not know what other work was done on the ice field at the same time as the header replacement. The manifold under the far catwalk was replaced, as were seven of the piping runs under the ice. These seven had splices from leaks of earlier years and other various flaws.

Many of the old plastic U-bends at the far end of the ice field were replaced with new metal ones. Jeff informs me that this is because plastic ones tend to deform and collapse over time. We also installed a "freeze ring" this year. This is a ring of pipe that circles the outside edge of our ice field to help ease the "fall to the wall" conditions of past years. See Jeff for the technical details, it’s worth the effort, besides, you’ll get to know who Jeff is.

Finally, a brine filter system was installed and all our brine was filtered before it was re-introduced to our system. Wow!! You might say, but that’s not all. In our next segment we’ll look at our new heating system.
