Empire State Bonspiel Results
The Schenectady women sent 3 teams to Utica to participate in this bonspiel. The
event was made up of 16 teams that were from the US and Canada. The Schenectady
teams were as follows:
Sch. 1: Marie Pletenik; Bunny Allaire; Shirley Burgess; Karen Hess
Sch. 2: Bette Sovik; Lisa Miller; Maxine Getty; Lisa Nieradka
Sch. 3: Dorothy Szymaszek; Flo Springstead (from Albany); Alice Rubin; Jane
Caruvana
Although none of our teams made the finals, we won for “best party-ers”! And in
the Saturday night special “Pot Lid” curling event, 8 teams participated that
were made up of players from different teams. I skipped a team of curlers from
Rochester, Ardsley, and Utica, to win the event (and boxes of Scottish
Shortbread as prizes.)
We all had a great time, and did some great curling on super keen, swingy ice.

Junior National Championships at Broomstones Curling Club
This past week the Junior National event was being held at the Broomstones
Curling Club in Massachusetts. The winning teams on both the junior men and
women were from Minnesota. Visit www.usacurl.org

St. Patrick's Day Dinner
The new date for the St. Patrick’s Day Dinner is Friday, March 14, 2003. Chef Charlotte Colton has
offered to chair the event, which is sure to mean a delicious, homemade meal. This is a popular event
and she will need lots of help, so please call her and volunteer.

Governor's Bonspiel in Albany
Two Schenectady rinks competed at the 16 rink event. I skipped a rink composed of Dion Warr, Dave
Hooper, and Pat Fitzgerald (vice to lead) and Charlie McCullough skipped a rink consisting of Jack
Fitzgerald, Shaun-Paul Manore, and Brian Lasiuk (Brian, I could not find your name in the directory so
I apologize if your last name is misspelled – Maureen).
Charlie found himself in the finals of the 'A' event, for the Governor's Bowl, against Border, a
Quebec team. My rink faced off against the sole Albany entry in the 'B' event, vying for the Hiatela
Trophy. Regrettably, both of our rinks came up short. A big plus for the weekend is that our own Pat
Fitzgerald won the coveted "Lead of the Spiel" award over the other 15 leads!

Closing Party
The closing party to be held on Saturday, March 29th is always a great time, so mark you calendar
and plan to attend. Margaret Brennan, veteran closing party chairperson (and a darn good one), has
offered to chair it again this year. When Margaret took over this event she made some changes that
resulted in record turn out and she's at it again. Margaret is looking for some new ideas to freshen up
this event, and that means she needs people. Please contact Margaret if you have any interest in
helping to plan our closing party.
