Team Rubin Claims Lovejoy Trophy

The two time Lovejoy winner, Vic Temple, was among the field of 8 teams that competed for the 78th annual Lovejoy Trophy at the Schenectady Curling Club on January 6 and 7, 2012. The Lovejoy is the club's men's championship bonspiel.

Congratulations to skip David Rubin and his team of Kevin Gomes at vice, Jeff Howles at second, and 1st year curler Joe Perrotto at lead. They won the Lovejoy Championship by defeating Fred Mackintosh’s team of Tom Lancaster, Bob Briskie, and Jim Gorgos with a score of 10 to 5.

Dan Machold eased past Vic Temple to capture the Rice Trophy in the second event. Jim Holmblad defeated Dan Navratil for the Steadwell/Jackson Medal in the third event, and Pat Fitzgerald downed Jim Sinkins for the Delack Medal in the fourth event.

Team Damon Finishes Tied for 2nd After Round Robin at U.S. Nationals Eastern Qualifier

Club members Brian Damon (skip), Mike Stefanik (vice), Peter Drechsler (2nd), and Art Merkley (lead) took part in the U.S. Nationals Eastern Qualifier which was held at the Potomac Curling Club. The event took place from Thursday, January 5 through Sunday, January 8.

Event standings, line scores, and more can be found at Potomac's website or at CurlingZone. Several games were available as webcasts.

Team McCormick (including former member Bill Stopera) advanced straight to the 2012 U.S. Men's Nationals in Philadelphia from February 11-18, 2012. They were perfect in the round robin. Teams Damon, Surka, and Corbett finished in a tie for 2nd place (each had 5 wins and 3 losses) and a chance to go to the challenge round event. Team Corbett had the bye in the tiebreaker, and Team Damon lost to Team Surka in the first tiebreaker match. Surka then beat Corbett to capture the Challenege Round spot.

SCC on the Road

US National Mixed Doubles

Mixed Doubles Nationals was held at Broomstones from December 8 to December 11. Schenectady Curling Club's Chrissy Haase (with Broomstones Bryan Fink), and Lenny Gaines (with Broomstones Sharon Quill) played some tough competition and did great. Haase won 4 out of 6 games, and Gaines won 1 out of 6 games. Team Haase lost a tie-breaker to make it into the playoffs.

Women's 10 and Under

Over at Albany Curling Club, the 1st Women's "10 and Under" was held on December 10 and 11. It was a great time with some wonderful curling.

All three Schenectady Curling Club teams went to the finals:

B Event Finalists: Team Navratil-SCC: Fay Navratil, Paula Lancaster, Yuko Kashiwado, Becky Trousil, Amanda Barr.

Calder Trophy won by Schenectady Curling Club

Dan Machold's rink of Charlie Brown, Rich Gonyeau, and Scott Brennan bested a field of 14 teams to capture the Calder Trophy. The Calder was held from December 1 to 4 at the Norfolk Curling Club in Connecticut. This event always features good competition. The ice this year was especially good.

Schenectady Wins GNCC Sr. Women’s Championship

The GNCC Sr. Women's Championship was held October 28th through 30th at the Utica Curling Club with a field of ten teams (down from 12 due to some last minute cancellations). Schenectady's Team Navratil captured the Championship with a clean sweep against Lake Placid, Utica, and Team Sprinstead of Albany. Congratulations to skip Fay Navratil and her team of Charlene Fitzgerald at vice, Alice Rubin at second, and Shirley Burgess at lead.

This is the second year for the GNCC Sr. Women’s Championship. Utica Curling Club's Carl Thomas (then GNCC President) and Peggy Rotton started the event just last year. Peggy Rotton donated the event trophy which returned with Team Navratil to SCC to be kept until next year's event. The GNCC Sr. Women’s Championship will be held at the Albany Curling Club in 2012.
